Scotland coach Vern Cotter believes a missed Finn Russell drop-goal attempt was the crucial turning point in the 15-9 home defeat by England.

With England leading 7-6, Russell pulled his attempt wide and Scotland trailed at the interval, passing up an important chance to develop some momentum.

“If we’d got the drop over and gone ahead at half time we’d have been in a great position,” Cotter said.

“We created opportunities but couldn’t finish them off, and we weren’t accurate enough.

Cotter insists Scotland can still look forward to a successful championship, as long as basic mistakes are cut out.

“There’s a lot more to come from this team.

“I’m disappointed with the way they let those opportunities pass through lost ball, but those problems will be quickly identified and we need to put the frustration behind us and just prepare for the next game.

“We can do better than that. I know we can.

“We cut down a few basic errors and become more accurate and start believing again. I think that game was there to be won and that’s the hard bit.

“So when we get ourselves in similar situations in the future we just need to be able to nail it, and those will be the basics of moving forward.”
